Dry Erase Wallcoverings

Preparation of Goods:

Examine goods to assure that pattern, color, quantity, and quality is as ordered. Separate goods by shade lot number and organize in roll number sequence, starting with the highest. Reverse roll the material for about an hour prior to installing. Reverse rolling will release curl memory in the wallcovering, caused from being stored in rolled form. Re-roll to original form before installing.

Preparation of Substrate:

Dry erase wallcovering can be installed over almost any properly prepared surface. Surfaces to be covered must be clean, smooth, dry, uniform in color, and structurally sound. Loose paint or wallcovering must be removed. Nail heads, nicks, gouges, and other surface imperfections should be filled with drywall compound, sanded smooth, and sealed. Clean ballpoint pen ink, wax crayon, ink marker, oil-based stains, or any foreign matter that may bleed through wallcovering and prime with a stain blocking primer/sealer. It is suggested that a pencil be used to mark the wallcovering, or wall, as light pencil marks do not bleed. Remove any substrate mildew with a chlorine bleach solution, rinse, and allow to dry before installing. Wash greasy walls with an ammonia solution, rinse, and allow to dry before installing.

New Drywall - the minimum gypsum board finish is a level 4 per GA-214 published by the Gypsum Association and endorsed by AWCI, PDCA, GA, and CISCA, although, a level 5 finish is preferred. Follow with a good quality pigmented acrylic wallcovering primer for a proper installation and product performance. Sand smooth any stipple or brush marks left from the primers.

New Plaster - allow wall to completely cure 60 to 90 days. Walls should be checked with a suitable moisture meter. Moisture content should not exceed 4%. Follow with a good quality pigmented acrylic wallcovering primer for a proper installation and product performance. Sand smooth any stipple or brush marks left from the primers.

Painted Surface - the resilience of moisture must be tested. With a wet sponge or cloth, hold directly on the painted surface for a few seconds and then wipe vigorously with the sponge or cloth. If a minimal amount of paint is removed, the paint should be sound. If a noticeable amount of paint is removed, the surface is moisture sensitive. If the paint is moisture sensitive, it should be sanded or washed with ammonia to remove the paint. In either case, the surface should be primed with a good quality pigmented acrylic wallcovering primer. Sand smooth any stipple or brush marks left from the primers.

Dry erase wallcovering may allow show-through due to the limited amount of opacity. It is recommended to use a good quality white acrylic primer.

Application of Dry Erase Wallcovering:

When installing vertically use a plumb line. When installing horizontally use a level line. Horizontal installation is recommended. Although seams can be written over, it is suggested to keep them out of the primary writing and viewing areas.

  • 32-84 inches for 54 inch product
  • 33-81 inches for 50 inch product
  • 34-80 inches for 48 inch product
Be sure to reverse every other strip regardless of vertical or horizontal installation method. Cut strips a few inches longer than required to allow for trimming at sidewalls, ceilings, and baseboards. Apply a uniform coat of a heavy duty, clay based or a heavy duty clear adhesive to the wall where each strip will be installed, overlap the edges at least 2 inches. Re-paste any dry areas or if there is a delay in hanging. Use a flexible wallcovering smoother (wrapped with a clean soft cloth) to remove air and excessive paste pockets from behind the dry erase wallcovering. Smooth material on the wall from the middle to the outside edges. Do not press hard enough to cause indentations in the finished product. Trim materials at the ceiling, baseboard, windows, and doors with a single edged razor blade (change razor blade often). Overlapping and double cutting is highly recommended to ensure neat and tight seams. Use a seam-cutting tool to prevent penetrating the substrate. Approximately 20-30 minutes after each piece is hung, using a seam roller, lightly roll or press the seams down making sure not to cause indentations in the finished product.
  1. Do not attempt to match a pasted strip of wallcovering to one that is not pasted.
  2. Vertical joints should not occur less than 6 inches from the outside and inside corners.
  3. Do not stretch the material to butt seams, slide the entire strip for proper fitting.
  4. Do not use metal or sharp objects on the surface.
  5. Do not install wallcovering unless the temperatures in the working and storage areas are at least 55° F.
  6. Be careful not to crease or bend material when handling.
  7. Do not puncture air bubbles under the surface.
  8. If the strip goes up unevenly, peel it off and reinstall.
  9. Do not score the wall when double cutting.
Extreme care should be exercised when trimming wallcovering around electrical outlets. Turn off electricity when working around electrical outlets. Cut clear around all electrical openings so adequate clearance is allowed between material and electrical wiring and boxes.

Chalk/Marker Board Resurfacing:

Surfaces to be covered must be clean, smooth, dry, uniform in color, and structurally sound. Nicks, gouges, and other surface imperfections should be filled with polyester automotive body filler, sanded smooth, and dust cleaned away. Clean ballpoint pen ink, wax crayon, ink marker, oil-based stains, or any foreign matter that may bleed through wallcovering. Wipe down all surrounding trim and tray with a damp cloth removing all dust and debris. Spot prime any patched or stained areas with an enamel spray paint similar in color to existing board’s surface. The dry erase wallcovering may allow show-through due to the limited amount of opacity. Cut material a few inches longer than needed to allow for finish trimming at edges. Apply a uniform coat of an adhesive promoting acrylic wallcovering primer to the board surface. Follow manufacturer’s application and clean-up instructions. Apply a uniform coat of VOV (vinyl-over-vinyl) adhesive to the board surface. Unroll 3’ - 4’ of material and align one factory edge to the topmost frame member on the board. The frame will be used as the level line. Allow 1-2 inches of overlap on the vertical frame member. Use a flexible wallcovering smoother (wrapped with a clean soft cloth) to remove air and excessive paste pockets from behind the dry erase wallcovering. Work the smoother in downward and outward motions. Remove dirt or debris that may come between the board and dry erase wallcovering. Peel the material back, remove the debris, and smooth the material back onto the board. When the material covers the entire board, remove the cloth from the smoother. Use the straight edge of the smoother to crease the material at the inside edges of the frame. With a utility knife, cut a relief at each of the frame corners to prevent stressing the dry erase wallcovering. Using a 6 inch broad knife and a new utility knife blade, trim off the material waste along the creased edge. Again with the wrapped smoother, lightly go over the dry erase wallcovering making sure to remove all air and excess paste pockets by completely pressing the backing into the wallcovering paste. Pressing to hard may leave permanent indentations in the finished product or could cause lifted edges.

Other Surfaces:

The same primer, paste, and techniques used to install over chalk/marker boards may be used to install over most impervious surfaces; one example would be a high-pressure laminate. Steel will require a complete sanding or grinding of the surface to remove any surface degradation or rust. Oil or other residue should be completely removed with lacquer thinner. Fill surface dimples with a polyester automotive body filler and sand smooth. Seal the surface with a rust inhibiting primer. Finish the preparation with an adhesive promoting primer. Apply the dry erase wallcovering with a VOV adhesive.

Clean Up:

Be sure to remove all excess adhesive immediately using a natural sponge or soft cloth and a warm / mild soap solution. Do not use abrasive cleaners. Rinse thoroughly with water and dry with clean toweling. Change rinse water frequently. A professional vinyl cleaner / wallpaper remover should be used where the adhesive has dried.

Important:

If you have any questions about the material, stop working and notify your supplier. Recommended wallcovering adhesive products have been specially developed for use in these applications. If there is some question of appearance, contact your supplier.

Wall Liner Hanging Instructions

Application:

Wall Liner is recommended for lining over sand finish plaster, cement block, V-grooved paneling, and other problem walls to provide a smooth base on which to apply other wallcoverings. It is intended to be used as a lining for bridging cracks or other cavities, but it will not hide all wall imperfections, such as protrusions or misalignment of cement block.

Wall Preparation:

Acceptable hanging surfaces must be clean, thoroughly dry and structurally intact. All loose paint and other wallcoverings must be removed. Paneled walls should be washed to remove oils, wax or polish. Adhesion may be enhanced by scoring the surface with coarse sandpaper and priming with diluted adhesive. Concrete block and similar highly porous surfaces should also be sanded as smooth as possible first, and then sized with a diluted adhesive. Let dry for at least two (2) hours.

Use only a lead pencil for marking walls and the back of the Wall Liner. DO NOT use ballpoint pen or marking pen. Any mildew must be removed from walls and the surfaces treated to inhibit further mildew growth. Do not install unless there is a minimum temperature of at least 55°F in both the storage and installation areas.

Adhesive:

Roman Wallcovering Adhesive A-848-B premixed vinyl wallcovering adhesive is recommended for use in installing Wall Liner. Commercial equivalents can also be used. When used as a primer, the adhesive may be diluted with up to 1 quart of clean water for each gallon of adhesive.

Pasting and Hanging: Paste only one strip at a time.

Brush or roll the wall covering adhesive thoroughly over the back surface, especially on the edges. To carry material to the wall, fold the wet side to the wet side, but avoid creasing the material. Depending on the viscosity, a slight amount of moisture may come through the wall liner book-folding. This is acceptable. Align the first strip to a plumb line. Smooth any overlap onto the ceiling and baseboard. Smooth liner to the wall with a smoothing brush. Be sure to remove all air pockets. Butt or double-cut all seams. DO NOT OVERLAP. Setting seams with a seam roller will help prevent them from opening. You can use scissors or single edge razor blades to trim any excess at the baseboard, ceiling and around windows and doors.

Allow 24 hours to dry before further treatment.

Vinyl Wallcoverings

Preparation of Goods:

Examine goods to assure that pattern, color, quantity and quality is as ordered. Separate goods by shade lot number and organize in roll number sequence, starting with highest number.

Preparation of Surface:

Surfaces to be covered must be clean, smooth, dry and structurally sound. Loose paint or other wallcoverings must be removed. To ensure maximum smoothness of installation, nail heads, nicks, gouges, and other surface imperfections should be sanded smooth and sealed. On new walls, dry wall joints should be taped, bedded and sanded smooth.

Walls should be checked with a suitable "moisture meter". Moisture content should not exceed four(4) percent. Remove any mildew from walls and treat surfaces to inhibit further mildew growth.

Vinyl Wallcoverings can be installed over almost any surface which has been properly prepared. Do not hang vinyl over ballpoint pen writing, wax crayon, ink marker, oil-based stains or any foreign matter that may bleed through the vinyl. It is suggested that lead pencil be used to mark vinyl or wall as pencil marks do not bleed.

Glossy surfaces should either be sanded to dull the surface or an application of Professional Vinyl Prep or Professional Heavy Duty Primer should be made.

On new drywall, if future strippability is desired and no primer is specified, use Professional Ultra-Prime Pro977 primer and Adhesive A-848-B. Some drywall joint compounds, contrast with the drywall paper surface, showing strong light and dark colored areas. Light colored, lightweight wallcoverings may allow show-through due to their limited amount of opacity. Should this situation occur, we recommend that you use Professional Ultra-Prime Pro977 primer then Heavy Duty A-848-B Adhesive.

Application of Wallcovering:

Before hanging, examine pattern for color uniformity and repeat in design. Some patterns should be registered or reversed, depending on texture and color, in order to ensure color uniformity. Follow instructions packaged with roll. Only full widths of material should be used for the most satisfactory installation. All material must be installed in roll sequence (numerical) within a shade lot starting with the highest number first and going in decreasing order, with each strip in sequence as cut from the roll.

For reversible patterns, every other strip of the wallcovering should be reversed (hang top to bottom and on the next stripe reverse bottom to top) to insure color uniformity.

Headers can cause unsatisfactory shading if hung out of sequence. The wallcovering is pre-trimmed and much of it can be butt-seamed. Overlapping and double-cutting and pre-trimming both have advantages in making acceptable seams. Do not "score" dry wall when double-cutting.

As with all vinyl wallcoverings, certain deeply embossed, non-design print patterns will provide a more satisfactory seam if a two to three inch selvage cut is taken from each side of the sheet. When hanging materials it is best to observe from a distance the first three sheets hung before continuing. This will indicate whether or not a deeper "cut-back" is in order.

Apply an even coat of adhesive to fabric side of material using a stiff bristle brush, roller or pasting machine in accordance with label recommendations. The wallcovering should be applied to the wall as soon as the adhesive has become tacky. Smooth surface, working out air bubbles as you go. As each strip is installed, immediately remove excess adhesive from wallcovering surface and seams using a natural sponge and a soft bristle brush frequently rinsed in clean warm water. Dry with clean toweling, professional vinyl cleaner/wallpaper remover should be used where adhesive has dried.

The following, or their equivalent, are the recommended adhesives for vinyl wallcovering:

  • Roman PRO 880 Clear
  • Roman PRO 732 Clay
  • Gibson Holman (formerly Evans) - Dynamite 234 Clear
  • Gibson Holman (formerly Evans) - Dynamite 111 Clay
These recommended wallcovering adhesive products have been specifically developed for use in these applications. We are not responsible for the appearance and performance of wallcovering not applied according to these instructions.

Vertical joints should not occur less than 6" from outside and inside corners.

Do not install wallcoverings unless a temperature above 55°F is maintained in both areas of installation and storage. Permanent building lights should be available for installation.

If, after applying three (3) strips, there is some question of appearance, stop and contact us.

Fabric Backed Vinyl Wallcoverings

Hanging Wallcovering Over Existing Wallcovering:

While we know that many customers hang over existing wallcovering, Wallhide does not recommend this practice. We suggest that the old wallcovering be removed first before installing new vinyl wallcovering. If a customer chooses to hang our wallcovering over existing wallcovering, there are adhesion-promoting primers such as Roman Adhesive's Professional R-35 that can be used to improve adhesion to the existing wallcovering.

Single layer installations typically have fewer problems with blisters and other installation defects than installations with multiple layers.

Hanging the wallcovering over existing wallcovering voids our Limited Warranty on the wallcovering.

Hanging Wallcovering Over Painted Wallcovering:

Wallhide does not recommend either painting over vinyl wallcovering or hanging additional layers of vinyl wallcovering over existing vinyl wallcovering.

If the customer chooses to hang over a painted wallcovering, the primary area of concern is to insure the paint on the existing wallcovering has adequate adhesion to the old wallcovering. Scratching the surface of the paint and doing a tape peel test should be done to test this adhesion. If the adhesion is satisfactory, the tape will not remove the paint from the existing wallcovering.

Assuming that the paint has adequate adhesion to the existing wallcovering, it should then be coated with an adhesion promoting primer such as Roman Professional R-35, following the manufacturer's instructions. After using an adhesion promoting primer, new wallcovering can then be hung with a conventional wallcovering adhesive.
